Located at the tip of Slovenia, in the southwestern region known as the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea, is a quaint town that provides beautiful and peaceful walks by the sea while admiring its Venetian medieval architecture and Mediterranean flair.
Tartinijev Trg
This is the largest and main square in Piran.
This is where people can congregate and admire the beautiful architecture of the buildings and take photos of Giuseppe Tartini’s monument made in 1896.
Many restaurants, shops, and bars surround this square.
Many pathways lead to and from this popular square to explore.

Climb to the top of the Duomo di San Giorgio and walk up the bell tower to see the fabulous view. Amidst the clear blue sea and sky, you can see their neighboring countries—Italy on one side and Croatia on the other.

Skocjan Cave
In contrast to the sea, go down into the earth with the Skocjan Cave. This is an excellent stop on the way to Piran. It is a large cave system in southwest Slovenia.
It was entered as a World UNESCO site in 1986 and is the largest underground cavern in Europe with a rushing underground river.
The guides are well-experienced and gives knowledgeable and safe tours through the dark and wet cave, bats included if you are lucky!
**Important tip: if you do go, no matter how hot it may be outside, make sure to bring a jacket, as it can get chilly underground. Wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking in the dark in damp, wet places.**
We made a day trip to Piran and the caves so here are a couple of places we stopped at for food.
Food
Pirat, Piran
Located not too far from the entrance of the main square, this restaurant seems to be popular with a large and inviting outdoor and indoor areas for guests.
I ordered the Mediterranean trio platter with white wine that came with grilled bread.
Truffle pasta
Gostilna Muha
While this place isn’t in Piran, we made a quick stop here on the way to Piran to try their prosciutto and red wine tasting with bread and olives.
This was a very affordable and delicious tasting.
We also drove by and saw some horses! About 15 minutes from here is Lipica, for any horse lovers.
Piran Salt
Check out Piranske Soline to take home some famous Piran Salt to cook with or give as souvenirs.
They have a few shops in other cities and Ljubljana if you want to wait until your last stop before carrying a bunch of salt back home.
Piran is a medieval coastal town that provides a low key and relaxing destination to explore and spend time taking in. Stay to see the sunset and take home some of their famous Piran Salt to cook with or give as souvenirs.
