Füssen is a quaint and romantic Bavarian town in Germany is worth visiting alone to see the Neuschwanstein Castle. We see the small town square, the fortress and the church and they are all within walking distance.
What to see…
Fussein Alstadt
The Fussein Alstadt, or Fussen Old Town is about 700 years old and you can have a leisurely stroll to see the baroque churches and the charming architecture that you don’t get anywhere else.
High Castle of Füssen
Nature
There is a fair share of luscious green trees and water natural scenes as you stroll and cross bridges to admire what natural scenes Füssen has to offer.
Where to eat…
Il Pescatore
We find that Il Pescatore has high ratings on Tripadvisor and decide to try it out. We walk into a bustling restaurant and see that no one seems to pay us any attention. We realize this is Germany and this means we just find our own seat and sit at an empty table. Once we do that, a waiter comes along with a menu and gives me a recommendation for the appetizer and entree. They were both something I’ve never had before.
The appetizer consists of very thinly sliced pork covered with a dressing that tasted a bit like thousand island topped with some cherry tomatoes sliced in half.
The entree is a fresh made pasta filled with ground pork. The sauce was heavy with olive oil or butter but still seemed light when you ate it. It has a delicate flavor contrasted with a bunch of arugula on top.
The pizza is hearty and flavorful. Service is friendly, and some waiters didn’t speak English, but Italian. I feel like I am in Italy but we are still in Germany. I guess this means that the experience feels authentic and a great place for solid Italian fare!
Where to stay…
Luitpoldpark Hotel
We enjoyed staying at the Luitpoldpark Hotel and especially since they include breakfast. The breakfast is indicative of classic quality German sausages and breakfast food that will give you the energy to climb up to the Neuschwanstein Castle.
In conclusion…
Fussein is a great place to stay if you are here to see the castles. It is a short bus and train ride away, yet this is a charming, walkable, and safe place to explore while you enjoy your mornings and evenings when you return from the castles.
